New Acropolis Museum - early morning .jpg

We visited the New Acroplis Museum early in the morning before the crowds arrived. No photography is allowed in the museum.
The displays are beautifully lit by natural daylight from skylights and large windows as well as from carefully places spotlights.
The "New Acroplis Museum " book by the architect Bernard Tschumi and his group indicates that the building is oriented architecturally to
receive the same light as the Parthenon at certain times of the day.

The museum building rests on large piers that are located within the ruins of an ancient village excavated during the planning of the
museum site and excavations for the foundations.
A glass floor at the entrance enables visitors to view these excavations which are actually the
cultural foundation for the artifacts in the museum as well as the physical foundation of the building.

Archaic sculptures are on pedestals on the first floor and are distributed so that they actually
interact with the people as they circulate through the displays.
The top floor of the museum is skewed to replicate the exact orientation of the Parthenon, which can be visualized through a floor to ceiling glass wall of windows.
Copies of the Parthenon pediment sculptures are set on each end of the new gallery, and copies of the triglyphs and metopes are located as they were on the Parthenon.
Most of this original material l is in the British Museum, having been appropriated by Lord Elgin between 1801 - 1805.
The Greek government has asked repeatedly that the originals be returned, but with no success.
