The famous Porch of the Maidens on the South side of the Erechtheion is one of the most photographed sites on the Acropolis.
The female figures supporting the porch are called Caryatids.
They have become the temple’s most famous feature, supporting the weight of the porch roof on their heads.
The Caryatids in this photograph are copies, with five of the six originals in the New Acropolis Museum.
built at the base of the Acropolis to house treasures from the Acropolis.
One of the six Caryatids is in the British Museum in London, having been appropriated by Lord Elgin
when he took the Parthenon marbles.
