National Missing Childrens Day
May 25
This is National Missing Childrens Day. This site, Take 25 , offers lots of information. Of particular use, it provides a very informative list of safety tips for you and your children. Here is #1: Teach your children their full names, address, and home phone number. Make sure they know your name.

This is from Roma Leah who is climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro with son, Dave:
Made it! All flights on time - only lost one bag - Dave's with all his gear on it! Hopefully it will come today - he is still asleep - went to bed at 9:30 last night and is still asleep at 10:30am It is Thursday a. m. here.
We were in Nairobi, Kenya Tues. night and rode a shuttle bus to Arusha in Tanzania. The landscape changed dramatically after we passed border - so beautiful - all in african dress except for business people - men with sticks pushing their herds of goats, etc. Saw gorgeous view of Mt. Kilimanjaro - think i am repeating myself.
The expedition company will put together what Dave doesn't have if bag doesn't come on 2:00pm shuttle - we went to bed at 9:30 and i woke up at 9:15 and dashed down to my free breakfast :) - Dave didn't budge - went back to room and he is still snoozing - we are 8 hours - about a day ahead of you - i feel great - no more jet lag but slept on plane.
Our toilet is in with shower with curtain so toilet won't get wet - real interesting - but clean, and people very nice - i guess bed was omfortable - had to sleep with mosquito netting - poured last night after we got in bed
Guide is coming to our room at 4 to look at my gear and make sure i have right things. hope Dave is awake :) I think we are ready to go! We leave at 9 a. m. in the morning and summit midnight starts next Thurs. night and we get back the following Saturday i think.

Off the sidelines
Like many of you, I have looked forward to Smoke Signals to see what is happening and who is posting but never added my own. Now is the time to speak up about something I know is important. In early 2006, I had the mammogram we all dread. The biopsy was benign but later in the year it was removed and cancer was there. Surgeries, followed by chemotherapy, and radiation. Two weeks of radiation left and I am feeling great and my future looks even better. I am truly a "poster child" for early detection which is the point of my comments.
Facts to know...
Median age of breast cancer diagnois is 61... know anyone who is 61???
Survival rate for localized breast cancer is 98%
Only 5-10% of breast cancers are due to heredity
Past two years a 2% drop in deaths from breast cancer due to early detection
So, get your mammogram on time every year. Remind your wife, sister, daughter, and friends. The doctors tell me early detection saved my life.
Also, if you are a sister to someone who has breast cancer or know someone who is, suggest they look at
The Sister Study . This is a long term study being run by NIEHS and NIH to look at how environmental factors and genes affect risk in 50,000 women. It may be a very important study for our children and grandchildren.
