A Roman Column

I found this unusual feature on one of the outer walls in the medina. I don't think it serves any structural purpose though.

An incongruous historical relic, testifying to the layers of time in this place. The textures and colors of the peeling wall add a sense of decadence as well. Imperial Rome is reduced here to a plastered ghost within a battered wall. A haunting, substantive image, Celia, that I shall never forget. It is only an old wall, yet it tells its story here as well as any you have ever told.
