Photos of a day trip from Chiang Mai to Lampang in November 2012.
Lampang has not been affected by tourism as much as Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, and has some attractions, including temples and an elephant conservation centre. I had time only for a day trip, and train timings were such that I had to leave almost as soon as I had arrived, so I saw nothing of the town itself.
The train journey to and from Chiang Mai is enjoyable as the railway line passes through tropical rural scenery and jungle. It also goes through the Khun Tan Tunnel, built in 1907. The tunnel is the longest railway tunnel in Thailand and its station is also the country's highest.
I looked at this gallery having just put down a book by the inveterate train traveller, Paul Theroux. Very apt timing and it made this set particularly evocative.
