Mexico Beach, FL, Underwater

These are photos taken in the waters around Mexico Beach, FL, which is about 25 miles east of Panama City,FL. I live in Mexico Beach and the Gulf of Mexico is practically my back yard. This area is not known for great visibility, but sometimes you get lucky. Diving in this area is in depths anywhere from 20 to 120 feet deep. Visibility can range from 0 to 70 feet. Most of the diving is done in the summer when the water tempertures can hit a toasty 87F (but look out for the thermocline). Winter temperatures can plunge to 50 or 55F. The marine life is much more diverse than you could imagine. We have everything from the tiniest nudibranch to large pelagics such as manta rays. 2009 was my first summer diving with a digital camera here, so I hope to add many more photos during the 2010 season.

As usual, your photos amaze me. I'm with Jill. The colorful starfish is something else. Thanks for sharing so this land lubber can experience the wet world. Still think you should get a book published with your photos and the stories behind them. Ramona

Carol, Your photos are absolutely fantastic. We have seen some of these sites as we snorkeled for scallops In fact, Jay used his Hawaian sling to get a couple flounders last week. Are you still scalloping in your area? Some of the areas around here like Keeton Beach, the scallops have simply left but other areas are still doing well. Have you got a couple free days when the tides might be right to come to your area to try scalloping? Donna and Jay
