The "Town Hall" is the most remarkable ancient monument in Brussels and one of the most beautiful examples of gothic architecture in Belgium.
The left wing was built by the architect Jacques Van Thienen dating back from 1402; the right wing (as shown here) by an unknown in 1444.
The Belfry is a masterpiece of elegance and lightness - built by Jean Van Ruysbroeck in 1449.
It is 90m high and is topped by a 5m high weathervane representing St. Michael downing the dragon.
A porch of 17 arches stands along the first floor; the high casement-windows of the other two floors are decorated with sculptures and statues.
A wide-vaulted door gives access to the tower; statues adorn the arches and the tympanum of the rib. The abutments represent justice, prudence,
peace, law, moderation and strength. In the inner court, two ponds decorated with allegirical statues represent two rivers: the Meuse and the Scheldt.
Behind the 'three stooges' (biro lang!) is "Le Renard" - the guild house of the haberdashers.
It was built by Van Nerum and Marc De Vos.
