Fledgling Frigate

The Frigates and Boobies lay their eggs directly on the ground or on very sparse nests. These large birds have no natural predators on the island and no need for more protected nesting. This fledgling frigate was in his nest as I walked by, and he was not happy. He was snapping his beak and squaking at me. I wasn't worried about him, but I had this nasty image of a full grown frigate bird zeroing in on the back of my head! The full grown birds have a wing span that must be over 6 feet, and I really wouldn't want to imagine what they could do with those hooked beaks. It's been said that these birds must be closely related to Pterodactyls, and that's not hard to believe! I took a picture and moved on quickly...
