May 16, 2004

A bookshelf in my bedroom. Two courses are represented here--"American Encounters: 1492-1865" and "American History from 1865-1920." I especially enjoyed the books from the earlier period; "A Shopkeeper's Millenium" being one of the most interesting. But then, "The Devil in the Shape of a Woman" was also excellent....

I will answer your question Phil, but I'd like to review my notes first. I'll send you a message when I post a reply.

True Linda, but the "object" is the book, the pages--worn, torn, highlighted maybe, but flipped through...used. The words still fresh, of course. Since the book has previously been sold, it can not be sold as "new" again. There's about a 10-20% discount, maybe more for used books. They'd be even cheaper if we could cut out the bookstore and buy them from each other, but there isn't that sense of frugality and industry at this university. Perhaps that "protestant ethic" is fading.

For me the best thing about this one is the 'used' labels. There is something rather strange to me about the concept of a book being 'used'. I always think of used meaning there is less value in the object now than before - for me the value of words can never be made less because someone has previously read them.

Hey . . .how come "ain't I a Woman" doens't say 'Used'?? . .Is there a social commentary here? LOL!

Just for my education, can you please describe what "protestant ethics", in 50 words or less, actually means - is it not all rather subjective.

good heavens - too heavy for me!

Wonderful shot. Takes me back to my old college days. And I share your love? of American History.

Ack, College Memories! I've gone from 4 to 3 bookcases.... Nice selection you have there!

Glenn, I figure the previous owner didn't care much for the book or would have kept it, like I have. Jeanne, I only have about 10 years worth of books here. The rest are at mom and dad's somewhere awaiting the move to the new house. :) I rarely buy books except for class. Most of the ones I've read lately came from the library. The bad thing is I can't even remember the titles anymore, though I've absorbed the ideas, I think.

Yeah, the yellow used labels are so amicable. I have a lot of used books, actually I think most of them are used ones. Sometimes I wonder what would the previous owner look like and how much do you benefit from the book?
Guest 17-May-2004 01:54
WOW You keep all your books? If I did that...I would have to move!!

I love those "used" stickers. There mere sight of them brings back a slew of memories. Great shot.
