Sponsor Me

Maxwell, my nephew, one of three boys born on October 15, 2002. Here he eats some of his first birthday cake. Friday he was diagnosed with autism. He's 18 months old now. He likes to walk around in circles staring at the ceiling. Or bend over and sort of stand on his head and feet or flap his arms. Because of his cousin's experience, his mom recognized something was wrong and got him checked out by a neurologist. (That was a battle in itself.) The doc says three hours a day, six days a week of "therapy" can really help him since he's still so young. But it's not covered by the state or apparently by their insurance? When he's three he'll be able to go to a state/township program--free. In the meantime his parents are encouraged to find sponsors, particularly corporate ones, to fund about 18 months of treatment. Pretty odd, if you ask me. Seems like the insurance company or the state ought to cover it before he gets worse. Early intervention can be effective.

My PotD was going to be this photo of a photo taken when the triplets were about one month old. But I thought this photo of Maxwell would work better.

He's an adorable boy, captured beautifully. I have several friend with austic boys. Early intervention is absolutely KEY to dealing with autism (as I have witnessed in the past few years). Its awful that this condition is STILL not treated as aggressively as it should be. If it were (God forbid) a leukemia or something like that, the gov't agencies nor the insurance companies would bat at eye at the recommended treatments (for the most part).

He has such expressive eyes. The very best of luck to Karen and family.

You have such a beautiful family, inside and out. He is fortunate to have you for an uncle and a mom who is willing and able to fight for him.

Mark, Thank you. I love this picture of him and it cracks me up. He was color coded the blue guy and still is. Strangely , if you put a red, green or blue sippy cup in front of him he will take the blue one which is his color. With Susie's advice and help from Maureen, I will not take NO for an answer from anyone. I have been aggressive in getting him help and will continue to do so until he is on the right path. I appreciate this and will keep you updated with his progress. thank you. love karen

What a beautiful little boy. My neighbors son is autistic, he is 5 years and I thought he would never learn to speak but last week I was amazed how he improved, He is going to a special school for autism children.

what a sad paradox .. early diagnosis but no help til he's REALLY in bad shape . .no sense helping to stave off anyhting too soon, might not get to use all the state's resources .. . . .anything I can do to help . .like defray some costs???

This is nice Mark. A cute photo. Also better for this purpose that the photo of all three little guys. There is a lot of scholarships and government money out there so we will all help Karen or at least point her in the right direction to help herself. I think Maxwell has an excellent chance, having been diagnosed so early in his life. We had to wait nine months to see a neurologist, and went thru four before finding one who we really liked. Anyone wanting a career path, I would suggest pediatric neurology. There is a big demand but little supply for them right now. Anyway...cute photo.
