February 3, 2004

The Steinway in my voice class room. It was completely overhauled last summer and looks and sounds much better, but goes out of tune quickly. Today I had my first voice lesson of the semester, three weeks late. My voice teacher is a lot like a personal trainer in the gym, always getting more out of me than I would otherwise give. He has somewhat controversial methods of teaching voice that he picked up from Ray Buckingham in NYC in the early 1970s. He knows how to go to the cause of the sound instead of the effect. His methods have been effective in teaching me how to sing well. But I've got a long way to go and a fairly small voice, so you won't see me at the Met or La Scala.

Tonight I also went to my first rehearsal with a Catholic University chorus--The Town and Gown Singers. I'm a "townie." They are non-audition, which was a big plus since I can't sight-sing, and that's a common requirement of the really good choruses here. T&G has a much more relaxed atmosphere than the group I sang with the previous two years. Not as good (by a long shot), but I wasn't enjoying rehearsals with them....Tonight we had some Russian black bread and cream cheese with chopped onion; and pita bread with homemade humus during the break.

(I'll work on a better photo of the Steinway during the semester.)

I love the rich colour in this, and the lines and angles make for a really striking picture.

Thank you, David. Refreshment photos may be in order next week!

Thank you, Pall, Jill and Ray. I wish I had a before photo. This must have been a very costly rebuild!

Ann, you mean you don't take your camera everywhere?! It's like an American Express card, I don't leave home without it. Look for a singing class at a community college or a community college chorus with a director who teaches vocal technique along with preparing for a concert. Those could be cheap ways to learn a few things.

Lovely!
When you upgrade to something bigger, KEEP your Coolpix!

Very well captured Mark.

I like this image, Mark. Very warm with interesting lines. I also liked reading your comments (I'm growing quite addicted to peeking into the lives of my fellow PADers!) Voice lessons and the singing group sound quite interesting. I could benefit from voice lessons... I love to sing but have absolutely no singing voice (just ask my family!) I hadn't thought about the great variety of images in your gallery being in some part due to the fact that the CP3100 is small enough to take everywhere with little trouble. You can't get the picture if you don't have a camera with you! BTW, thanks for the mariachi frogs! :)

Beautiful piece - beautifully captured

Nice capture Mark, very warm, very geometric. Sounds like the snacks at your class would make a good subject too. I can almost see the interesting colour and texture contrasts of the onions and cream cheese on black bread. Mmmm, now you've made me really hungry ...

Thank you, Angela. :)

The Coolpix does have the benefit of fitting very well in my coat pocket. It even fits in the front pocket of my jeans! Makes it easy to have at all times.

Exquisite detail here, Mark. I love the angle and composition you've used for this. Incredible warmth. -- angela :)
