A late season, warm spell has made the tropical hibiscuses on our deck the outdoors focal point of October color in my world. Each of the first 16 days of the month highlights a different hibiscus in my collection that was in bloom outdoors that day. When a killing hard freeze (killing all sensitive outdoor vegetation) finally happened (early for a normal October), all of the hibiscuses were then moved indoors to our Solar Room. It's been a totally weird weather month with unseasonably hot weather followed by an early freeze.
Although this part of the US is not normally an area for breath taking Fall colors, this year Nature has been drabber than average. I have been fortunate that my hibiscuses have put on a gorgeous show this October; with as many as 20 different plants in bloom each day up while outside.
The petunias and zinnias also thrived and continued to bloom profusely outdoors
until the temperature got down to 21 degrees and a record setting, killing low on October 17th.
