More Problems 5-13-25

Just when I thought we had the courtyard design work done, two new problems have popped up bringing things to a halt again.

********************

One is the toxic crab apple tree that we just paid for before I knew it is toxic to dogs.

"The Tina Crabapple (Sargent Tina Crabapple) is not safe for dogs if ingested. While crabapple trees in general are not highly toxic, Tina is. Symptoms of Poisoning: Vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, tremors, and seizures.

Potential Risks for Dogs
Fruit Seeds: The seeds contain amygdalin, which can break down into cyanide if chewed.
Leaves & Stems: These parts also contain toxic compounds that may cause digestive issues.

Precautions
Prevent Access: If you have a Tina Crabapple, consider fencing it off.
Safer Alternatives: If you're looking for a dog-friendly tree, consider non-toxic ornamental trees."

"Crab apples contain seeds that contain cyanogenic glycosides which can release cyanide when chewed or digested. This can lead to symptoms such as difficulty breathing, dilated pupils, and even death."

We have a puppy who eats everything. I'm really bummed over this turn of events. That area is not in the above photo, but in the northwest corner of this photo https://pbase.com/britestar/image/175020977 behind the fountain.

So now, what do we do??? Because it's so risky, I refuse to have the crab apple planted inside our courtyard. Unfortunately, that mini tree was just what the corner needed. I can see no replacement.

Meanwhile, the second problem (a Clethra) was supposed to go between the porch area and the window in the above photo. However, the Clethra's growth requirements don't fit the area. So, we are back to trying to find an alternative. I'm getting so sick of dealing with this project. I just want it done!!!

We gave the landscaper the go ahead today to order all the plants for the Courtyard (some that will now require changing), the Mound Island bed, and the 7 trees on the East side of the driveway.

I want to get things moving. It was hot (close to 90 degrees) today, and tomorrow is supposedly to be as hot as a normal Fourth of July in Kansas City. This is no longer Spring planting weather. Now, we again have major design problems in the courtyard. We also have plants on order (and paid for) that won't work. Will I ever get a finished courtyard??? Or will this now be my permanent view going forward?
