We're at a weird phase of the remodeling process.
Although subway tile is the hot fad, I've never liked it. Subway tile reminds me of the tile on subway (the transportation kind) walls or of public bathrooms. Obviously, most people feel differently and are eagerly adding it to their homes. Nevertheless, I like what I like, and I can't be convinced to use what I'm not particularly fond of. I don't find subway tile unattractive in someone else's home. New designs can be quite tasteful. However, subway tile is just not for me.
I have always liked this warm toned, ceramic tile backsplash that has flowering herbs on random tiles. I grow a lot of herbs, plus, I allow the herbs to flower in my garden. Thus, this backsplash speaks to me. The latest backsplash fads don't.
The above tile will also go nicely with our future new countertop with the gold veins. Warmth and coolness together will be a theme in our kitchen redo. Of course, I know this tile goes very well with our solid cherry wood cabinets, which will remain lightly stained natural wood. Current trend says to paint the wood, but that feels blasphemous to me.... Meanwhile, warm tones together feel homey. Thus, the backsplash stays. Eclectic suits me. Not everything has to be on 2024/25 trend. Trends come and go. Classics stays.
However, keeping the backsplash will mean more tedious work for the countertop installers.
