Death Valley: Storms, Dunes, and Badwater [Updated]

A few selections from my first visits to Death Valley in almost 20 years...it is such an enchanting place. One trip was taken on a wonderfully hazy, dusty day, when visibility was barely great enough to see across the valley. Another visit was taken on a day which was incredibly clear after a significant rainstorm. Perhaps my favorite of the trips was taken during several very windy, stormy days after a record breaking rainfall. Only the dunes near Furnace Creek and Badwater were open during this period (Fall-Winter 2004)...but it was enough to keep me very busy, and happy. I was totally taken by the quality of the light in Death Valley; it has a 'feeling' all its own. All comments/critiques welcome.

I visited Death Valley for the first time in my life in early December 2008. Your photos capture beauty, spirit and vastness of a truly magnificent place. It is a geological marvel and I hope to visit again for a longer period of time.

What a terrific Gallery you have. I grew up not far from Death Valley and your gallery makes me ashamed I didn't take advantage of living so close to such a beautiful area. However, I could probably have visited Death Valley frequently and not gotten the same quailty of photos that you have managed to capture. You have amazing talent. I just returned from my first trip to DV where the humidity and haze made for low contrast and tough shooting conditions. These are the types of shots I wished I could have got there.

I spent a week in Death valley in summer 1988. Fascinating place and I hope to get back there some day. Your photos are great and really showcase the beauty and variety found there. Only suggestion is to maybe include info on your equipment and settings to help the rest of us out. ;-)

Hi Brian, I've visited Death Valley last summer 2004. I just loved to experience the notorious heat and to see what Death Valley had to offer. I would love to go there again, especially after seeing your photographs. I'm honest when I say that I truly truly love your images! You've done a wonderful job! The way you captured Death Valley in these beautiful light circumstances, the duststorm, the clearing winds, etc. By the way, wasn't Death Valley flooded last summer as well, that was a record-breaking thing, too... cars slipping off the pavement, halfly soaked up by the mud... something's going on there, it seems to compensate the record-breaking heat. Once again... all I can say: wow!! Keep up the wonderful job!! Take care! - Menno

I was just reading an article about a new tourist site in the lowest place on earth, in the Dead Sea, here in Israel. Through your amazing photos, Brian, I could realize that you have some similar phenomenas in your Death Valley. The strange thing about such places is that they are very alive. You have succeeded to pass me the spirit of the place on its forms, flora and shades. Keep on inspiring us.
