The template for the control station of Virginia-class submarines is the cockpit of the Boeing 747, and only the most senior enlisted personnel are allowed to "fly" the boat -- steer it, and control its speed and depth. (Sorry, DBFers -- no more helm and planesmen.)
Operationally, everything is run by computers -- speed, course and depth are entered on touch screens and the boat does all the work.
