Mauna Loa Strip

Kilauea

The Mauna Loa Strip is the narrow and presently forested section of Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park that connects its Kilauea summit and upper elevation Mauna Loa units. The strip is wedged between the deforested pastures of Kapapala Ranch on the West, and Keauhou Ranch on the East. The Strip was also grazed in the past, and has been the focus of decades of reforestation efforts which have grown in intensity in recent years. (Reforestation is also proceeding in Keauhou Ranch and the forests above Volcano Village are fenced and protected.) It is thick with pasture grass and weeds, but in another century or two it may be restored to diverse native forest.
