The forested wedge is the strip of Volcanoes National Park that connects the Kilauea and Mauna Loa sections of the park. It's wedged between Kapapala Ranch on the left and Keauhou Ranch on the right. Much of the Strip is koa forest with significant grazing damage. Large areas of 'ohi'a dieback are visible at lower elevations. Mauna Loa strip road runs through this section of the park, between the highway and the trailhead for the Mauna Loa Trial at 6662 feet elevation. Red Hill is visible above, on Mauna Loa's rift zone. Hikers usually spend the night at Red Hill Cabin on the way to the summit.
