Tiger Swallowtail Butterfly

Great Falls NP, MD

Not a "Monacrh" thanks Melinda

While I was walking (sweating) around at Great Falls I saw four
or five Monarch butterflies apparently "drinking" from these damp zones
where the water has just recently dried.
I know the background is terrible but the contast really struck me!

I was also trying to use the 80-400 as a close up lens so this was an
experiment as well! I have used a little blur to soften the background.

Nikon D200 ,Nikkor 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6D ED VR AF
1/125s f/5.3 at 260.0mm iso400 full exif

other sizes: small medium original auto

that's definitely *not* a monarch. (sorry, don't know what it really is.)

Nice shot! It's "puddling". It's going after chloride ions - necessary salts.
