25th - "How Green Was My Valley"

near Capel-y-ffin, Monmouthsire view map

John Ford's epic film on life in the Rhondda Valley in the first half of the 20th century stars Walter Pidgeon, Maureen O'Hara and Donald Crisp: "life is hard in a Welsh mining town and no less so for the Morgan family. Seen through the eyes of the family's youngest, Huw, we learn of the family's trials and tribulations. Family patriarch Gwyllim and his older sons work in the mines, dangerous and unhealthy as it is. Gwyllim has greater hopes for younger son how to honor his hard working parents. Huw who has his own ideas on how to honor his father. Daughter Angharad is the most beautiful girl in the valley and is very much in love with Mr. Gruffydd who isn't sure he can provide her the life she deserves. Times are hard and good men find themselves out of work and exploited by unseen mine owners" (IMDB)

I saw this on the TV when I was very young, and have never forgotten the bleak B&W cinematography - happily, today's landscape (the Llanthony Valley from Gospel Pass) is somewhat more brighter and colourful than the one portrayed in the film

Super composition, very nice leading line and lots of space left with the big sky - well thought image.

I saw that movie not long ago and it was such a sombre reminder of what life was like in the Rhondda Valley area. It has certainly greened up today, for sure. Love this shot. It looks like perfect walking country. V

I like the colour version, like you say the film was a little grim.
