Elk are shedding their winter coats, so they look rather rumpled. They have dropped thier antlers in February or so, and their new antlers, just beginning to grow, are "in velvet". They aren't as shy or as dangerous as bear or bison, so some of these photos were taken at distances of 20 to 30 yards.
