Yellowstone May 2006

In early 2006 Bill Bates suggested to other contributors to the DPReview.com Canon forum that he'd welcome others to a photographing trip to Yellowstone park. About 40 amateur photographers made the trip. Many of those were quite expert and came with some superb equipment. My own objectives were to meet some of the others and to learn from them. The photos in this gallery aren't nearly as artistic, as detailed, or as finished as those posted by several others. But they're my memories of Yellowstone. I learned a lot on this trip and I think my skills improved as a result. I'd love to go on similar trips in the future.

Please note that I wasn't nearly as close to these animals as the photos might imply. Landscape photos were usually taken with a 17-85 mm lens, or occasionally with a 70-200mm lens. Animal photos were taken at the equivalent of a 640mm lens, and often with a 900mm equivalent. The long lenses used were the Sigma 70-200 and the Canon 100-400, sometimes with a 1.4X teleconverter.
