Road chapel, Margraten

Arnhem, Arnheim

An answered prayer, lightning strike, an accident, a cure - all reasons to set up a road chapel.
In South Limburg there are countless of them. Usually at a crossroads outside the village or on
a hill, but sometimes just on the street or in a field. The oldest chapels date from the
15th century. It has stood at the intersection of Eykerweg and Heiligerweg near Margraten since
the end of the 18th century. It is built from marl stone, which is not surprising with a marl
quarry nearby. The maintenance of these types of roadside chapels is often done by the local
residents. For the Sacrament Procession the chapel is extensively decorated with flowers,
sand patterns and banners. The rest of the year the decoration is somewhat simpler.
Late 18th century. Posted here in 1950.
