The Blacksmith

Arnhem, Arnheim

In the storage cellar under his forge, blacksmith, bicycle dealer and bicycle repairman
Frans Lambooy holds a substantial supply of carbide. He uses that when welding. But carbide can,
as is known, pop pretty well. The smithy is therefore equipped with "explosion windows" that open
automatically in the event of an explosion. A smart trick to prevent major accidents. The demand
for ironwork declined in the 1930s. Frans' sons Wim and Theo therefore decide to start a garage
company. Business is going well and after a while the old blacksmiths have to make way for
expansion. The last traditional relic in Loerbeek is demolished in 1989. Three years later,
the forge is rebuilt here, to start a second life in the museum. Posted here in 1993.
