Already in the 17th century there are traffic jams for the toll gates
A car holiday abroad is often about toll roads. But on black Saturdays, the waiting time for the
toll gates can increase considerably. Perhaps it is a comforting thought that until 1900 it is no
different in many places in the Netherlands. In the 17th and 18th centuries there are thousands
of spinning tops that give up. But yes, toll is an indispensable source of income. In 1811,
Napoleon nevertheless made the decision and abolished the Rijkstollen in the Netherlands.
But four years later, King William I simply reintroduced them. It was not until 1900 that the
Rijkstoll was finished. Only municipal and private tolls last longer. Such as this on the Steenweg
in Zuidlaren, which is canceled on December 10, 1947 by the Provincial Executive of Drenthe.
