Around the World in 80 Minutes: Las Vegas, NV

Las Vegas is the navel of the universe of the genuine fake. You can watch pirate ships exchanging simulated bullets in artificial Carribean lagoons, listen to part-time gondolieres singing on indoor canals under a sky of plaster, marvel at a construction set Eiffel Tower, have lunch in an air-conditioned replica of an open-air North-African plaza, ride a roller-coaster through the make-believe high-rises of New York city, and travel thousands of years back in time to see "ancient" Rome, or the wonderfully appointed burial chamber of King Tut. And, you can do all of that on foot in 80 minutes.

As a side note: the fake can have its value. For example, King Tut's re-constructed burial chamber in the Luxor Hotel in Las Vegas delivers a much better impression of the overall splendor of the site than the empty burial site in the Valley of the Kings and the scattered, totally out-of-context artifacts in the museums.

This gallery only covers a small sample of what Las Vegas has to offer.
