City Built on Salt: Lueneburg, Germany


The city of Lueneburg, not far from Hamburg in Northern Germany, owes its wealth to the white gold extracted from the salt marshes on which part of the city is built. Salt and salt trade made Lueneburg an important member of the Hanseatic League. Many of the historic houses in town are wonderful representatives of the Northern German building style.
