The instinct of "herding" protection for the species is alive and well. Daily now we have visiting the Observation Pond at the Visitor Center our families of Bald Eagles. If danger approaches these birds will disperse rapidly, hoping to cause enough confusion that the Raptor will have to many choices to choose from and settle for the "lowly" Coot. Later after the danger passes, the birds will once again break from the herd to eat and sleep. This group was located in the middle of the ponds water area.
