M9_V10.jpg

My grandfather and great grandfather getting ready for ginning season when the cotton crops are harvested. During those times the County schools were dismissed for a couple of weeks so the boys and girls could help pick the crop and then bring the wagons to the ginning site. The gin during peak season would operation 24 hours a day and 7 days a week so as to finish the work before the Fall rains set in and soak the raw cotton fibers in the fields. After cotton season, Pop would operated (and relieve Memmie doing the store work) his little country store and when timber was cut...he would saw, dry, and plane the timber into lumber.

In fact, his little community did not have a school when mother was born ....so both men sawed the logs and created the lumber from trees donated by the farmers in the immediate area and the first school was built on land they donated along with their efforts for building supplies so education could be close by for the young men and women of the community.

When the one room building was finished, he went to the head of the County Goverment so a teacher could be assigned. The Chairman told Pop that when they had a building in there community he would hire a teacher....Pop informed him then that the building was built and ready....shortly a teach arrived. Today that school site has a little over 1200 students from kindergarden to 12th grade, a Sports complex for football, basketball, baseball, and indoor individual competition.
