It is that time of the year when the Hooded Merganser's attention turns to sex and nesting. This female for some unknown reason decided it was time to nest and choose a Kestrel's nesting box which is home to one of the residnet Kestrel couples at the refuge. She made several attempt to take over the box....but like most ladies she thought she wore a size 3 when actually she is a size 8. She did not fit the entrance plus the Kestrel had a few chose words for her at a descret distance.


And as usual the male Merganser had contests to see which one had the privilege of "knowing" a female Merganser. Such is the traditions of late Winter and early Spring.
