Mereenie Loop Attractions

The Mereenie Loop road is an excellent alternative route back to Alice Springs from the popular sights at Yulara, and requires a pass to travel through Aboriginal land to Watarrka National Park (Kings Canyon) and Finke Gorge National Park which includes Palm Valley. We first camped at Kings Canyon near the resort and after the walk through Kings Canyon and Palm Valley we camped again in the Finke Gorge national Park.

Kings Canyon, is in the George Gill Range, itself a part of the James Range, is spectacular sight - sheer, 100m walls of brilliantly coloured rock, including the Garden of Eden at the head of the gorge with a deep pool and moist-climate vegetation. "The tall, shimmering palms that grace Palm Valley seem out of place in the dry desert environment, but they are a remarkable remnant from a time when central Australia was a much wetter, tropical place." - Lonely Planet
