A few days away from Bangkok with Philip to the town of Kanchanaburi on the River Kwai, with most of the official attractions relating to World War Two and the building of the Thailand-Burma Railway by Allied prisoners of war, brutally treated as slave labour under Japanese occupation.
Features include the infamous Bridge over the River Kwai, the Death Railway, the Hellfire Pass Museum, the Death Railway Museum and several beautifully maintained and very moving war cemeteries.
The town itself is fairly unremarkable but the many resorts, guesthouses and restaurants set along the River Kwai enjoy fine views across and along the wide attractive waterway to the Bridge and the railway. The Bridge is a showpiece at night, illuminated in changing colours.
