Inspecting the engine

Waiting at Darwin, people admire the train and engine.

The Ghan was opened to passengers and goods in 1929. It carried servicemen for training and deployment in the 1940’s, later playing an important role in industries such as mining and agriculture. Some of the tracks have been replaced over the years and in 2004 the promised transcontinental rail link was completed with the new stretch from Alice Springs to Darwin.
