Leslie Gulch is an 11,000 acre "Area of Critical Environmental Concern" protected and managed by the Bureau of Land Management(BLM) in SE Oregon. It is home to bighorn sheep, coyotes, bobcats, lizards, rattlesnakes and rare plant species.
Its many colorful geologic formations are made of Leslie Gulch Tuff which is a consolidated rhyolite volcanic ash erupted from nearby Mahogany Mountain caldera about 15.5 million years ago.
It is named for cattle rancher Hiram E. Leslie who was killed by a lightning strike here in 1883.
