Shows a cross section of a petrified tree located at the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument (Clarno Unit) between the towns of Fossil and Antelope, Oregon USA. The Clarno Unit of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument is best known for its fossil remains found along trails. Trails track geology up to 50 million years old.
This image shows a petrified tree of unknown species about 9 inches (23 centimeters) in diameter. It is located on the "Trail of the Fossils" below "The Palisades" in the national monument just off Oregon Route 218. It is possibly the best example of a petrified tree in Oregon but much less impressive than what you'd see at the Petrified Forest National Park in northern Arizona USA.
The John Day Fossil Beds National Monument in the United States has three unmanned units located in central Oregon USA. Those three units are the Clarno, Sheep Rock and Painted Hills units. The Painted Hills Unit is the most well known of the three.
