John Day Fossil Beds - Clarno Unit

Images from the Clarno Unit of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument in central Oregon USA. It is located 18 miles (29 kilometers) east of the town of Fossil, Oregon USA.

The Clarno unit is known for its lahar flows, one set is called "The Palisades", where there are exposed but very weathered fossils. On a walking trail there is a timetable of exposed geologic history going as far back as 40 million years ago when the area was covered in thick jungle. The lahars preserved sycamore leaves and trees in their wake. Some of those fossils are exposed along the "Trail of the Fossils" walk just off the highway.
