Joel Whittemore (Stone Brook Creek) Bridge

An 8 foot wide walking bridge in Clover Memorial Park at 1st Street and Santiam Highway (Hwy. 20) in downtown Sweet Home. It was built by Ben Dahlenburg's high school Building Trades Class in 1989.

It started life on the back of a mobile trailer and hauled in parades to promote covered bridge preservation. Between parades and civic events it was parked between the Weddle and Dahlenburg covered bridges in Sankey Park out behind Sweet Home High School.

It's named after Joel Whittemore, a New Hampshire man who'd bought the bridge then decided not to claim it. Sweet Home parks maintenance manager Don Menear needed a bridge and contacted Whittemore who agreed to donate the bridge to the City of Sweet Home as long as it was named after him. The rest, as they say, is history.
