The Middleham Jewel AD 1400-1500 (front showing sapphire). A hidden gem - only the owner of this reliquary pendant knew and understood it's true value. Beneath the gold and sapphire, even beneath the protective pictures and words, lay embroidered fragments and pieces of earth. This hidden relic consists of eight roundels of embroidered silk thread. Each thread was wrapped in gold foil. All eight were packed in a matrix of soil and root fragments. An inscription around the edge of the Jewel reveals the hopes and fears of it's owner. The word TETRAGRAMMATON refers to the name of God in Hebrew, whilst ANANIZAPTA is a magic word, used as a charm to protect against epilepsy - York Museum.
