Roman stone relief of Sol. Classical Gorgons and Celtic sun gods are often carved in a similar fashion. Flowing snakes, hair or the sun's rays emenate from their heads. Including local gods in the imperial pantheon allowed the local authorities to bind the people of the empire more closely together.
