This is beautifully done. I'm assuming that they're chess pieces. The light and shadow bring out the texture and colour of the wood beautifully, aided by the fact that the background is a completely opposite colour. I like the placement of the additional pieces just outside the depth of field for context, and the way they almost seem to perform a "supporting character" role.
