Taylor Glacier Toe Ice

Ice is truly amazing. With so many icy variations and processes, of course native far-northerners had dozens of words for it. Early season the ice is cold and dry, shiny and blue. As it warms, it whitens, softening and slowly changing form. Each season the ice at the toe of the glacier melts into pools on the lake ice and later refreezes, causing the expansion domes in the photos. Also, you can see the rollers that form in the ice at the edge of the lake, the same ice that melts and refreezes, as the glacier presses against the lake ice in it's very slow movement into the lake. The minerals in the Blood Falls outflow, which I believe are somewhat saline, melt sooner and respond differently to the temperatures. I am fortunate to have worked here over the period during which the ice went from frozen-shiny to becoming soft or liquid (remember that there aren't diurnal temp changes because of the latitude; ie: the daytime is 4 months). All of the ice formations are mesmerizing. (Oh yeah, the "toe" of the glacier is it's lower edge, also called the tongue or terminus, if you didn't figure that out).
