These should give you some idea of what life in camp was like (not that we spent much time in camp). In addition to the living tent ("Endurance" tent), were smaller sleeping tents, and a floorless tent with bathroom facilities. As everywhere in the Dry Valleys, both solid and liquid human waste are taken back to McMurdo for shipment back to the States as biohazardous waste.
Ant. NZ website: "Numerous mummified seals (mostly crabeaters) and some mummified Adelie penguins are also found in the Dry Valleys. It is thought that these carcasses are of animals that became disoriented and headed inland instead of seaward, eventually to die of dehydration up to 40 km or so from the coast. The carcasses are freeze-dried in excellent condition by the climate in the Dry Valleys, but they eventually erode as the wind takes its toll." They have been carbon-dated to as far back as 5000-9000 years old.
This was a very fun and lively group, as suggested by the silly hat Erin is wearing the photo. Those braids she had done before both of her project's ice seasons. At the end of the season party, we helped her take them out. She had colored fake-hair braided in, such as blue (ice blue?_
