You're right, Nelson. Unfortunately I kept shooting outdoors at 1600
(after leaving dark churches) which does produce noise on the XT but, worse,
makes more washed-out colors even when the day was wonderful for color.

Unlike the P&S cameras with little sensors, a DSLR like the Rebel XT has a much bigger sensor which produces virtually noise free pictures all the way to ISO800. I frequently shoot at ISO1600 with my XT (now sold) and ISO3200 on my 20D (also sold) and 5D (current) without worrying too much about the noise.
