"The Pig and Whistle" mess in South Africa during Boer War. Granddad was a member of the "Buffs", a nickname for men in the Kentish (and other county) Yeomanry Regiments. It referred to Buffalos possibly, as a result of their prior service in Africa.

Kim adds: You, me & Nana in Spring or early summer 1952 in front of number 14/11, ??? Road, RAF Watton, nr Norwich.  This was sergeant’s quarters as it was just before Dad got his Q-Commission and went of to Malaya to work with the SAS in raking the CTs out of the forest.  I’m 4½ years and I can thank my lucky stars that I didn’t turn out gay!  Granddad must have already died and Nana lived for another ~10 years.
