No, no Photoshop here (Jonathan, your Photoshop skills are way above the level of mine). Both images are of overflow pipe ("The Morning Glory Spillway") for the damn on Lake Berryessa, CA. During summer months this is nothing more than a huge cement pipe sticking up above water level. But during spring, when the water level rises high enough, the pipe gets buried below the surface of the lake creating this 'hole' in the water. If it looks 'mysterious' in the pictures, it look twice that in real life. It is as if the lake was being sucked down into a huge hole. Plus, you get the sound effect to go with the visual one; quite an experience. I guess this is similar to the mine disaster you speak of, but at least this 'hole' is intentional. BTW, I uploaded additional image of the pipe which shows its true nature a bit more than the other two images.

What the heck is happening in this image? I would've guessed Photoshop but the next image in the set (the one with the out-of-focus fence) makes it a tough thing to fake indeed. I guess you could do the world-pool effect first and then photograph a fence and add a blur effect, then super-impose it over the image as a layer. Props if this is the case. It's an amazingly realistic effect. The only time I've seen this type of thing in real life was in footage of a disaster where some people drilling for oil penetrated a salt mine and 1/3 of the lake was sucked down into the mine. Amazing photo either way.
