Leila, from Burundi, now living in Dar es Salaam, told us that she had studied in South Africa for five years. However Martha, a director of a local project, told us that Leila has suffered trauma and makes up stories; Leila did not study in South Africa. (Martha’s own mother was killed in the genocide in Rwanda). Here Leila sits in a room occupied by two woman with trauma, one from Somalia and one from Burundi. This is not Leila’s room, but she repeatedly locked herself inside it.
At lunch Leila downed half a beaker of strong local spirit Konyagi, in one go. I had to leave soon afterwards, but the afternoon seemed unlikely to end well.
