About 20 years ago I began restoring about a dozen, or so, old family photos. What started out as a hobby, became an on-going passion for not only restoring, but for archiving these priceless images. In the other vintage photo galleries on my PBase site, I've restored over 400 images so that family & friends could visit and experience, again, these precious moments in time. This particular gallery was created so you may see my labor-of-love "before & after" images. This will be an "on-going" work-in-progress until I either run out of photos, or run out of storage space. Press on any of the thumbnail photos to enlarge for a more detailed view. The larger, single thumbnails offer a "before & after" animated gif to better demonstrate the degree of difficulty of the restorations. I restore all my images manually, using various tools, in photoshop. I don't use any auto-retouching algorithms. How fun is that?

I don't have problem with re-touching pictures. What you do is beyond re-touching. When you add things to photos, they are no longer photos. You should call what you do "digital portrait drawing"

This is great how you've provided these photos for everyone to enjoy--especially your family. I did a similar project last year. It's wierd to say but it changed my life. I experienced those that came before me in a very deep and unexpected way. To spend hours on a photo working up close on the face of a long absent parent or grandparent at various stages of their life is a very moving experience. Thanks for adding the intriguing "before and after" aspect of this. Very good!!! Dan.

dear real mensch, what a real and great labor of love you are practising...compliments...awakening the images of the ones that came before us... (and their names are still known). sadly i had to toss lots of family pictures...at that moment the pictured persons became really dead forever.....keep up your menschlichkeit...and great work. thank you , blessings, sabine

Your restoration technique is superb! The removal of the masking tape , perfect matching opened eyes etc... It was a pleasure to see your work , are you self taught?

Wow, you are truly a master of photoshop! I know all the bells and whistles, and I still cant restore photos that well. Great choice of family pictures too!
