101224_125935_13273 Back To The Beginning (Fri 24 Dec 10)

Old Melbourne Gaol (Jail), Russell Street Melbourne VIC

And so we're back at the start. It seems to be more or less the location of image 13184, though we can see the model of the site from image 13272 more clearly.

Normally I wouldn't have posted a second similar photo. However in this case I'm doing something a bit meta, partly as a rare celebration.

13272 was first posted on PBase on 29 December 2010, only 5 days after I took this series of shots. The shot of Martha Needle was posted a couple of weeks later, on 17 January 2011. And that was it. The gallery was left dormant for months, which became years, which became over a decade.

I've been on a project of "de-PBasing" my galleries; getting rid of any reference to PBase in the watermarks, embedding the commentary in the photo files to make them easier to upload elsewhere, changing the sizes of the images to less PBase-specific sizes, and standardising file naming conventions.

This has been done partly systematically (picking a gallery to update and working through it), and part randomly. The random part is looking at the visitor path logs to see who looked at my galleries. (That's not hard; it's PBase, there are hardly any.) As they do, I update those photos.

As I've alluded to in some of the descriptions, a handful of the shots in this gallery predate Google's effective boycott on PBase; they do actually turn up in Google search results. Nobody ever leaves a comment about why they were searching for the images or what they thought of them, but they land here anyway. That in turn triggered some updates in the "random" category. However in addition to that, I decided that I was sick of partially finished galleries. Thus I threw myself into this one. On Saturday 17 August 2024, 4,985 days after these shots were taken (wow that's close to 5,000, which I grant you is just a number, but still...)... I put the last of them up.

As always, it's not the processing of the photos that takes the time. It's researching and writing up the stories behind them. Going back into archives to search through newspapers from the 1800s, trying to find meagre scraps of documentation from a dozen websites, that kind of thing. Whether anyone else gets any value out of that, I have no idea. I hope so. But even if they don't, I do. I don't just want pictures, even attractive ones; I want understanding of what I'm seeing.

It's hardly something that will go down in the annals of history as a great achievement, but on a personal level? It's always nice to actually finish something.

So that's it. It's over. Go home. Go.

It's not like you're in gaol.

(Unless you're a ghost viewing this gallery from Cell 17, in which case... sorry about that.)
