Having abandoned the Basilica as a place that was giving me bad vibes, I'm about to reverse course and head back the way I came along Via Frate Elia, which can be seen through the arch.
I did have a shot of the arch from down the hill when we came up, but there were too many people and too much contrast for it to be particularly useful. I much prefer this shot.
The building on the left is the Istituto Padre Lodovico Da Casoria Per Ciechi Pluriminorati, which will be discussed in the next image. The building on the right, which admittedly you can see very little of is, or I should say was, the Hotel Subasio. (Monte Subasio, it may be remembered from the gallery description, is the mountain in whose foothills Assisi is located. That would be the source of the hotel's name.)
The strange thing is that the hotel is still listed on many booking sites, though it does not have an entry on Google itself. The last review of it on Trip Advisor reads:
"You gotta be kidding!!!
We were booked for 5 nights at their camera suite, a room with a balcony overlooking the beautiful view. The day we were arriving September 11, 2016 we were informed that that Hotel Subasio had closed down. They put us in Hotel Priori which charged us the same rate €1150 for not the same kind of category. The a/c wasn't working & leaving the window meant getting no sleep either cuz of the noise from the road. Can't believe we paid that much for that room."
Leaving aside the barely literate use of "gotta" and "cuz", it means that the hotel closed down a mere couple of weeks after we were there. There is one review from March 2017 on Expedia.com which read:
"My reservation was cancelled because of hotel renovations and according to some reviews they where (sic) needed so hopefully it will get a good update."
If it's being renovated, the renovations are taking slightly longer than the construction of the pyramids because 5 years later there is still no indication of it operating there. No reviews, no availability on the booking sites despite the listings, nothing.
