160906_114414_0994 All The News That's Fit To Eat

Via del Giglio 59, Firenze, Toscana, Italia

This is an oddly shaped building which sits on the corner of the previously mentioned Via del Giglio (which runs south west from here), the Via del Melarancio which runs west, and the rather tiny walkway, the Via dell'Amorino, which runs north west. (Amorino? It loosely translates to something like "cupid" or "cherub". It's the alley that runs along the side of the building in this shot.)

When I saw this café, it punched my buttons in a good way. I've always loved good writing. By extension I love good journalism, though I must confess that the amount of such journalism seems to be diminishing with each passing year. There are many mainstream news organisations that have abandoned objective truth in favour of agenda pushing. This has always been an issue, of course, but now it's more like a plague. With some (rapidly increasing to "many") mainstream media outlets, I assume that they're lying to me until or unless I can prove otherwise. That's before you factor in the almost complete loss of distinction between journalism and op-ed. I swear, I have had news articles and "journalists" telling me what's right and what's wrong up to the metaphorical "here" {gestures to throat}. Give me the facts, tell me where they're derived from, and I'LL be the one to make my judgement on the issue. These days it seems to be a rarity outside of The Economist, and even they stray occasionally.

Still, like Fox Mulder "I want to believe". Accordingly, when I saw a café with a name like this, I thought "I really need to go in there!". And had I had the time, I would have. I probably would have been a little bit disappointed because from what I can see, the "news" connection is tenuous indeed. I expected a coffee shop/bar with abundant reading material scattered around, but the photos that I saw of the inside of it indicated no such thing.

Unfortunately, I'll now never know. Although I didn't know it in 2016 when this shot was taken, this café had less than 2 years to live and would be gone before we returned to Florence in 2019. All of the review sites that I looked at show the place as being (a) well regarded and (b) "permanently closed". Google Street View shows that the building is now painted with signs which read "Habitat Drink & More Raw Bar, The Italian Fusion restaurant". This place also has a decently high rating, although it seems a little bit obsessed with serving raw food. To quote from its menu "keyword della nostra cucina: RAW!" I'm sure I don't need to translate.

However one thing is for certain; you'll have to bring your own journalism to read while you're eating it.

Yes, too bad that it didn't stay around at least long enough for your visit.

That’s too bad it closed and has the signage. Love the POV. It’s seem slightly claustrophobic. V
